Half of inmates in U.S. mentally ill

Benjamin Shors, Staff writer, September 7, 2006, More than half of all prison and jail inmates have a mental health problem, according to a report released by the U.S. Justice Department on Wednesday.The report, issued by the department's Bureau of Justice Statistics, found that 64 percent of local jail inmates – a higher percentage than both state and federal prison populations – showed symptoms of a mental disorder. Spokane County Jail = "3rd Largest Mental Hospital in the State of Washington"

In a recent internal meeting of local law enforcement, an undisclosed official coined Spokane County Jail as "The 3rd Largest Mental Hospital in the State of Washington". Most everyone in the know undeniably acknowledges that something needs to be done to correct this problem.

no help available from mental health or mental hospital for son /addict

judicial system should offer choice to patient. jail or treatment for addiction.  Funds should be made available  due to excess funds as per the media last week.Talk is that that money will be given back to the taxpayers.  The jails are full of mentally ill: some with addictions.  They are released under their own recognizance even with unpaid bond as in the case of my son to be turned back to the street to continue with his drug abuse.

Welcome to our new site focusing attention on the growing need to catch mentally ill /addicts from falling through the cracks.

This new organization, Itsnotmyproblem.org, is dedicating itself to bring attention to the rising problem of our justice system plugging up with cases evolved around mental illness and addiction. A new mental health court is starting up to handle some of these cases. However resources to treat them are diminishing. We look forward to providing a place for family, friends, social workers, mental health workers, civil workers, and judicial entities to network together to provide some possible answers to these problems.
